Fate/Zero : Chapter 02

(Text) 3 Years Ago

[1]
(Text-upper left) Regarding the Holy Grail –
(Text-lower right) Turin, Italy

(Tokiomi) According to occultism –
(Tokiomi) Outside of this world, at the summit of dimensional theories, there is a “power”.

[2]
(Tokiomi) The exact location from which all events originate.
(Tokiomi) That is the dearest wish of all magi,
(Tokiomi) The Swirl of Origins.

[3]
(Tokiomi) …The beginning as well as the demise of all creation.
(Tokiomi) Where everything in this world is remembered, where everything in this world is created – the seat of God.

Page 02

[1]
(Text-back) What began it all, the Holy Grail –

(Tokiomi) 200 years ago,
(Tokiomi) There were those who set in motion an attempt to reach that place “outside the world”.

[2]
(Tokiomi-right) Einzbern,
(Tokiomi-middle) Makiri,
(Tokiomi-left) Tōsaka.

(Tokiomi) The Three Great Families of the Beginning planned a reproduction of the Holy Grail, spoken of in many traditions.
(Tokiomi) In order to summon the Grail, said to be able to realise any desire,
(Tokiomi) The three families of magi offered their secret arts to each other, and at last, allowed the “omnipotent container”, the Grail to appear.

Page 03

[1]
(Tokiomi) …However, as soon as they found out that the Grail will answer the prayers of only one,
(Tokiomi) The partnership became blood feuds, as it took the form of a conflict.
(Tokiomi) This is the beginning of the Holy Grail War.

[2]
(Tokiomi) Henceforth, the Grail would be summoned in a cycle of once every 60 years, coming again to the Far East land of Fuyuki.
(Tokiomi) The Grail selects seven magi who have the power and authority to receive it,
(Tokiomi) And makes possible the Servants, the calling forth of Heroic Spirits.
(Tokiomi) Which of the seven is appropriate as the bearer of the Grail –
(Tokiomi) That is what a battle to the death will decide.

Page 04

[1]
(Tokiomi) The design which has appeared on your right hand is called the Command Spells.

[2]
(Tokiomi) The proof that you were chosen by the Grail.

[3]
(Tokiomi) The stigmata granted to you for the purpose of controlling a Servant.
(Kirei) ………

Page 05

[1]
(Tokiomi) The Holy Grail War is, in reality, a battle employing Servants as familiars.
(Tokiomi) Accordingly, a suitable background in magecraft is necessary for the Master.
(Tokiomi) …Normally, the seven chosen by the Grail should all be magi,

[2]
(Tokiomi) But for the Grail to notice someone like you, who is unconnected to magecraft, at such an early stage –
(Tokiomi) – It is extremely unprecedented.

[3]
(Kirei) …Just what exactly are these Servants that you have spoken of?

[4]
(Kirei) Heroic Spirits are the great and the distinguished, legends who have left their names in history and tradition… they are an existence with a spiritual rank equivalent to a god.
(Kirei) To “summon and have them become familiars”…

Page 06

[1]
(Tokiomi) It may be hard to believe, but it is the truth.
(Tokiomi) Just a fragment of the Grail’s power can make possible such an impossibility.
(Tokiomi) You should understand just how absurd a treasure it is.

[2]
(Tokiomi) Heroic Spirits can be summoned from as recent as several centuries ago,
(Tokiomi) To as ancient a time as the Age of Gods.
(Tokiomi) Seven Heroic Spirits will each serve seven magi – seven Masters.
(Tokiomi) They will safeguard their own Masters while exterminating enemy Masters.
(Tokiomi) …Heroes from any era, any nation, resurrected into modern times to vie for dominion in a battle to the death.

Page 07

[1]
(Tokiomi) That is the Holy Grail War of Fuyuki.

[2]
(Kirei) Something so monstrous,
(Kirei) In a city with tens of thousands of residents?

[3]
(Risei) It is an unspoken law that confrontations must be conducted in secrecy.

[4]
(Risei) In order to enforce that, the Holy Church dispatches a supervisor,
(Risei) To contain and minimise the disaster of the Holy Grail War, conceal its existence, and ensure the magi follow the principle of secrecy.

Page 08

[1]
(Kirei) Our Church, the judge for a strife between magi?
(Risei) Indeed because it is a strife between magi.
(Risei) A member of the Magecraft Association would be entangled by the interests of the various factions. They had no choice but to rely on an outside authority.

[2]
(Risei) Moreover, the Holy Church cannot remain silent when this was all started by a treasure crowned with the name of the Grail.
(Risei) It’s possible that it is truly that which received the blood of the Son of God.

[3]
(Kirei) Please wait.
(Kirei) Is the supervisor not chosen from the Church for the sake of impartiality…?

[4]
(Risei) That is that.
(Risei) Well, you can say this is a loophole in the rules.

Page 09

[1]
(Tokiomi) Mr. Kotomine, you should not trouble your son.
(Tokiomi) We should enter the main topic soon.

[2]
(Risei) Hm, that’s true.

[3]
(Risei) Kirei.
(Risei) What we had talked about until now is nothing more than the “external” circumstances surrounding the Holy Grail War.

[4]
(Kirei) …By which you mean?

Page 10

[3]
(Kirei) Why me – ?

[4]
(Kirei) To me, ideals, or desires……
(Kirei) It’s as if I don’t even have this thing called a sense of purpose.

Page 11

[1]
(Kirei) For as long as I can remember, no idea, quest, or pleasure could sway my heart.
(Kirei) A soul empty in every respect.

[2]
(Kirei) However, I had thought that it was due to my own immaturity.
(Kirei) Believing that someday, something would guide me to a higher truth of God,
(Kirei) Save me with holy gospels – I had wagered on that hope, clung to it.

[3]
(Kirei) …In truth, I had already understood,
(Kirei) That I was a human who can no longer be saved, not even by the love of God.

[4]
(Kirei) Angry and desperate at myself, I repeatedly conducted self-mutilation, under the name of the hardships of proper training.
(Kirei) And what I obtained were things I hadn’t even wished for – positions, and prestige…

Page 12

[2]
(Kirei) ………
(Kirei) I don’t understand…

[3]
(Kirei) The Holy Grail – what could possibly the reason for an “omnipotent wish-granting machine” to choose me…

Page 13

[2]
(Irie) It’s been two days since Saber’s been called forth…
(Irie) We must depart from Einzbern Castle by tomorrow.

[4]
(Irie) …What are you looking at?

[5]
(Kiritsugu) A report from the group who slipped into the Clock Tower at London.
(Kiritsugu) I wanted to investigate the Masters of the coming Holy Grail War.

Page 14

[1]
(Kiritsugu) ………

[2]
(Irie) …Is,
(Irie) Something the matter?

[3]
(Kiritsugu) Einzbern, Tōsaka, and Makiri, which has changed its name to Matō –
(Kiritsugu) The Grail prioritises Magi connected to the “Three Great Families” in granting Command Spells, but…

[4]
(Kiritsugu) This fellow.
(Kiritsugu) He’s someone dispatched by the Holy Church.
(Kiritsugu) The son of Kotomine Risei, who was a former Executor of the “Eighth” and now serves as the supervisor.

(Text-screen)
Kotomine Kirei

Born 1967.
Accompanied father Risei on pilgrimages
since at a young age, graduated in ’81
from St. Ignacio Theological College in
Manresa (…)

Page 15

[1]
(Kiritsugu) He had been studying under the magus Tōsaka Tokiomi since three years ago,
(Kiritsugu) But they broke off after he was granted the Command Spells.

[2]
(Irie-offset) Umm…
(Irie) ……Kotomine Kirei, born 1967.
(Irie-side) This is hard to read…
(Irie) Accompanied father Risei on pilgrimages since at a young age, graduated in ’81 from St. Ignacio Theological College in Manresa…

[3]
(Irie) Skipped two grades, and was student council president?
(Irie) He seems like quite the impressive character.
(Kiritsugu) Yeah.

[4]
(Kiritsugu) At that rate, he might have even be able to become a Cardinal.
(Kiritsugu) But he left the fast track and applied to the Holy Church,
(Kiritsugu) Even though he could have gone anywhere he wanted.
(Kiritsugu) Of all the things he could’ve done, why would he stoop to the level of the Church’s internal organisations?

Page 16

[1]
(Kiritsugu) In the end, he settled in the same post as his father.
(Kiritsugu) But before that, he was transferred three times as a teenager, and was even appointed as an Executor.
(Kiritsugu) They’re a brigade of killers who suppress heresy.
(Kiritsugu) It’s not something you can get into with half-hearted determination.

[2]
(Irie) Perhaps he was a fanatic.
(Irie) It’s not unheard of to be too innocent and become swallowed by your faith.

[3]
(Kiritsugu) I don’t think that’s it…
(Kiritsugu) If that’s the case, it doesn’t explain his situation for these three years.

[4]
(Kiritsugu) Leaving for the heretical Magecraft Association is just asking too much.
(Kiritsugu) He might have sworn his loyalty to the organisation rather than the doctrine,
(Kiritsugu) But that’s no reason for him to devote himself to magecraft so seriously.

[5]
(Kiritsugu) He acquired skills in alchemy, evocation, summoning, divination…
(Kiritsugu) In recovery magecraft, he even exceeded his own teacher.
(Irie) ………
(Kiritsugu) Just what is this assertiveness?

Page 17

[1]
(Irie) Dear.

[2]
(Irie) It’s true that this Kirei is an eccentric,
(Irie) But is he a man worth this much attention?
(Irie) It does seem that he has learned many talents,
(Irie) But nothing remarkable about him stands out.

[3]
(Kiritsugu) Yeah.
(Kiritsugu) That just draws me more and more.

Page 18

[2]
(Kiritsugu) No matter what this man was allowed to try, he could never reach the “best of the best”.
(Kiritsugu) He is a normal and average person in every way.
(Kiritsugu) With only his abnormal amount of effort, the mastery he acquires is obtained terrifying quickly.
(Kiritsugu) Most likely, he has trained himself tens of times harder than others.

[3]
(Kiritsugu) And then, when he is only one step away from the end,
(Kiritsugu) He moves on to another type of training with no reluctance.
(Kiritsugu) He abandons the skills he had cultivated up until then as though they were worthless.

[4]
(Irie) ……You think this man is a strong enemy, more so than any other Master?

Page 19

[1]
(Kiritsugu) He chose to live in ways more strenuous than anyone else,
(Kiritsugu) But this man has never once had “passion” in his life.
(Kiritsugu) He’s – definitely dangerous.

[2]
(Kiritsugu) This man doesn’t believe in anything.
(Kiritsugu) He just wholeheartedly wanted to find an answer, and in the end, after all that he had gone through, he found nothing.
(Kiritsugu) The only things in his heart are anger and despair.
(Kiritsugu) He probably doesn’t have anything that can be called a desire.

[3]
(Kiritsugu) Why would such an abysmal and empty human being go so far as risking his life to seek the Grail?

[4]
(Irie) ……Is it not the intentions of the Holy Church?
(Irie) I mean, they could have after the Grail, mistaking it to be an objected related to a Saint.
(Kiritsugu) No, someone who has nothing more than a motive like that wouldn’t be granted Command Spells by the Grail.

Page 20

[1]
(Kiritsugu) This man was chosen to be a Master by the Grail.
(Kiritsugu) There must at least be a reason for him to obtain the Grail.
(Kiritsugu) What terrifies me is how I almost cannot see it at all.

[2]
(Kiritsugu) What will happen if a human like this, so empty and lacking in desires, obtains the Grail?

[3]
(Kiritsugu) The man’s entire life was made up only of the accumulation of despair.
(Kiritsugu) The Grail, as a wish-granting machine, might be completely dyed by the colour of that despair.

Page 21

[1]
(Irie) The vessel of the Grail entrusted to me will never be yielded to anyone.
(Irie) When the Grail has been filled, the one who will obtain it –

[2]
(Irie) Is you, and only you, Kiritsugu.

Page 22

[1]
(Kiritsugu) I can’t lose.

[2]
(Kiritsugu) No matter what.

Page 23

[2]
(Kiritsugu) I’ll go greet Ilya.

[3]
(Irie) ………

Page 26

[2]
(Irie) As expected of the bearer of Excalibur, Arthur Pendragon.

[3]
(Saber) Irisviel.

Page 27

[1]
(Saber) Ex… Excuse my rudeness.
(Saber) It will become a conflict soon,
(Saber) So I thought of moving my body.
(Saber) I borrowed a sword from the castle.

[2]
(Irie) Don’t worry about it.
(Irie) It was wrong of me to approach you carelessly.
(Saber) I’m sorry…

[3]
(Saber) …Where is Kiritsugu?

[4]
(Irie) With Ilya.
(Irie) After all, we are departing for Japan tomorrow.
(Saber) I see.

[5]
(Irie) Are you still unsatisfied with Kiritsugu’s attitude?

Page 28

[1]
(Saber) ……If I may speak frankly,
(Saber) My impression was that my Master was a cold-hearted individual.
(Saber) But seeing the way Kiritsugu treats you or your daughter……

[2]
(Saber) It seems I incurred much displeasure from him.

(Irie) This is…
(Irie) The legendary King Arthur?!

Page 29

[4]
(Irie) Kiritsugu!

(Saber) Ever since I have been called forth – let alone exchanging words,
(Saber) Even if I ask him a question, he deliberately ignores me and never lets our eyes meet.

Page 30

[2]
(Saber) There’s nothing to laugh about, Irisviel.
(Irie) …I’m sorry.
(Irie) I thought, maybe you’re still holding a grudge from the time when you were called.

[3]
(Saber) Somewhat.
(Saber) I am used to the fact that my appearance is different from how everyone imagined…
(Saber) It is true that I behaved as a man.
(Saber) …But it was my long-cherished desire that this lie could be resolved without being passed into history.

[4]
(Saber) To be honest, it is unpleasant that I would be doubted as the owner of that sheath.

[5]
(Irie) Even if you say that, it can’t be helped.
(Irie) Your legend is too famous,
(Irie) And it has been dramatised over these 1500 years.

Page 31

[1]
(Irie) The gap with the image of the King Arthur we know is too great.

[2]
(Saber) My appearance cannot be helped, regardless of what is said.
(Saber) The moment I drew the sword of contract from the stone, The magic of unaging was upon me and stopped my apparent age.

[3]
(Saber) To begin with, the subjects of the time held no doubt as to the King’s outer appearance,

[4]
(Saber) Because all that was requested of me was that I completed my obligations as the King.

[5]
(Saber) Does Kiritsugu…
(Saber) Hold me in contempt, because of my true form as a woman?
(Saber) Think that I do not deserve to take up a sword?

Page 32

[1]
(Irie) That’s not it.
(Irie) Even he can clearly see your power.
(Irie) He wouldn’t misjudge a Heroic Spirit who obtained the seat of Saber like that.

[2]
(Irie) ……If he’s angry, there’s a different reason.

[3]
(Saber) Angry?

[4]
(Saber) Are you saying I made Kiritsugu angry?

[5]
(Saber) I cannot understand that at all.
(Saber) We have not spoken to each other even once.
(Irie) His anger isn’t directed at you personally.

Page 33

[1]
(Irie) Most likely, he’s angry at the legend of King Arthur itself.
(Irie) He is probably angry at the people who surrounded you in your time.
(Irie) Those cruel people who allowed the duty of ‘King’ to be forced onto a little girl.

[2]
(Saber) There was no right or wrong.
(Saber) I had already prepared myself when I drew the sword from the stone.

[3]
(Irie) …The way you had accepted your fate like that is all the more reason why this is aggravating.

[4]
(Irie) And on that point, perhaps,

[5]
(Irie) – He is angry at none other than the girl called Altria.
(Saber) ………

Page 34

[1]
(Saber) But that is not for him to feel sentimental about.
(Saber) He has no right to dispute the decisions of the people of my time, including myself.

[2]
(Irie) That’s why he remains silent.
(Saber) !

[3]
(Irie) Emiya Kiritsugu and the hero called Altria will always be irreconcilable.
(Irie) – That’s what he’s resigned himself to.

[4]
(Irie) Even if you exchange words, you can only mutually deny one another.

Page 35

[1]
(Saber) ………

[2]
(Saber) I give you my thanks, Irisviel.

[3]
(Saber) If you had not proposed to become my replacement Master,
(Saber) I would have lost the Holy Grail War of this cycle without even fighting.

[4]
(Irie) The thanks is mutual.
(Irie) After all, I want my husband to be the one to obtain the Grail in the end.

[5]
(Irie) Just what kind of man is Kiritsugu from your eyes, Irisviel?

Page 36

[1]
(Irie) A husband and a guide.
(Irie) And the person who gave my life meaning.
(Irie) – But that’s not what you want to hear, right, Saber?

[2]
(Irie) If you want to know – deep down, he is a kind person.

[3]
(Irie) He is simply so kind that he could not forgive the cruelty of the world.
(Irie) And to fight against that,
(Irie) He became more ruthless than anyone else.

[4]
(Saber) Even I can understand that sort of determination.
(Saber) If you are in the position of reaching a decision, you can only approach it by casting aside human emotions.

Page 37

[1]
(Saber) Wanting to save the world with the power of the Grail –
(Saber) – Is that not what you have said, Irisviel?
(Saber) That that is your and Kiritsugu’s wish.

[2]
(Irie) Yes. It is nothing more than what had been handed down to me,
(Irie) But I think that it is worth risking my life for.

[3]
(Saber) The wish I must entrust to the Grail is the same.
(Saber) No matter what, I want to save the Britain that this hand could not protect.
(Saber) ……I think that what you and Kiritsugu are aspiring for is correct.
(Saber) It is a path to be proud of.

[4]
(Irie) ………
(Irie) Is that so……

Page 38

[1]
(Saber) Irisviel.
(Saber) You deeply understand and trust your husband, Kiritsugu.

[2]
(Saber) The two of you, as husband and wife, can’t not think about the bliss of being a normal family.
(Saber) But if Kiritsugu also thinks the same way for me…
(Saber) They are both equally, desires which will not be rewarded.

[3]
(Irie) Can you please not hate Kiritsugu for thinking this?

[4]
(Saber) Of course.

[5]
(Irie) ………

[6]
(Saber) But Irisviel,
(Saber) Is it all right for you to talk to me here?
(Irie) Hmm?

[7]
(Saber) What I mean is –
(Saber) Should you not bid farewell to your daughter like Kiritsugu?

Page 39

[1]
(Irie) Ah, that’s what you meant.
(Irie) – It’s all right. Farewells aren’t necessary between her and I.

[2]
(Irie) Even if I, Irisviel, am no longer here, it doesn’t mean I’ve disappeared and gone.
(Irie) She’ll understand that properly once she’s an adult.

[3]
(Irie) It’s because she and I are the same – we are women of Einzbern.
(Saber) ………?

[5]
(Saber) Irisviel.

[6]
(Saber) You will definitely survive.

Page 42

[1]
(Saber) I will protect you to the very end.

[2]
(Saber) Wager on the pride of this sword!

Page 43

[3]
(Irie) Saber, obtain the Grail,
(Irie) For the sake of you and your Master.

[4]
(Irie) Then, the thousand-year-long desire of the Einzberns will be ended,
(Irie) And my daughter and I will be released from our fate.
(Irie) – The only one I can rely on is you,
(Irie) Altria!

Page 44

[1]
(Ilya) How long will Mother and Kiritsugu,
(Ilya) Be gone for work?

[2]
(Ilya) When will you come back?
(Kiritsugu) Daddy will probably come back after three weeks.
(Kiritsugu) – Mommy, I think, will take quite a while longer…

[3]
(Ilya) I heard from Mother, too.
(Ilya) That it’ll be a long goodbye.
(Ilya) But even she can’t meet Ilya, she’ll always be by Ilya’s side.

Page 45

[1]
(Ilya) That’s why it’s not lonely – she told me last night, before I was asleep.
(Ilya) That’s why Ilya will always be together with Mother.

[2]
(Kiritsugu) ………
(Kiritsugu) I see…

[3]
(Kiritsugu) So light…
(Kiritsugu) Even though she’s already eight years old…
(Kiritsugu) It must be because of the absurd modifications during her birth.

[4]
(Kiritsugu) Her growth will stop soon.
(Ilya) ?

[5]
(Kiritsugu) Even so, to hope and wish for so much happiness,
(Kiritsugu) – Hey, Ilya.
(Kiritsugu) That the sorrows of her life are completely out of her mind – that’s probably my ego…

[6]
(Ilya) …Kiritsugu?

Page 46

[1]
(Kiritsugu) Will you be able to wait, Ilya?
(Kiritsugu) Can you stand being alone until Daddy comes back?

[2]
(Ilya) Yep! Ilya will be patient.
(Ilya) I’ll be waiting for you together with Mother.

[3]
(Kiritsugu) ………
(Kiritsugu) ……then Daddy will promise you, too.
(Kiritsugu) I won’t keep you waiting, Ilya.

Page 47

[1]
(Kiritsugu) Daddy will definitely be back soon.

[2]
(Kiritsugu) Definitely……!

Page 48

[1]
(Waver) I declare –
(Text) Fuyuki, Japan

[3]
(Waver) Your body shall serve under me.

[4]
(Waver) My fate shall be with your sword.

[5]
(Waver) Submit to the beckoning of the Holy Grail.
(Waver) If you will submit to this will and this reason, then answer.

Page 49

[1]
(Waver) An oath shall be sworn here –
(Waver) I shall attain all virtues of all of Heaven.
(Waver) I shall have dominion over all evils of all of Hell.

[2]
(Waver) From the seventh Heaven, attended to by three great words of power,

[3]
(Waver) Come forth from the ring of restraint, protector of the balance – !

Page 52

[1]
(Rider) I ask,
(Text-lower-right) A new Heroic Spirit.

[2]
(Rider) Is this the Master who has called me forth?
